Recent amendments to the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999 allow you to lodge an objection on behalf of your clients to certain decisions made by the Registrar of the Australian Business Register (ABR).
You can lodge an objection if the Registrar:
refuses to give your client an ABN
refuses to cancel your client’s ABN
refuses to suppress your client’s ABN details
cancels your client’s ABN.
You can also lodge an objection to the:
date of effect of your client’s ABN
date of effect of the cancellation of your client’s ABN.
What you need to do
You must lodge an objection in writing within 60 days from the date your client is given notice by the ABR.
If you are lodging an objection to a refusal to give your client an ABN, include the refusal identifier. This is labelled as ‘Your reference’ in the notice sent to your client.
