Common errors that delay income tax returns

Email to a friend
Printer friendly format

When the data in your client’s tax return is incorrect, we have to manually match the return details with details on our systems before we can process the return.

This means we can't guarantee the normal 14 day processing time for tax returns lodged using the electronic lodgment service (ELS).

What you need to do

The following details the most common errors. To help speed up processing, we recommend you check them before submitting returns.

Surname

Names must be the same as in previous returns. Common errors include:

  • punctuation
  • additional spaces
  • spelling
  • surname and first name reversals
  • amalgamating middle names or initials with surnames.

If a name was previously incorrect or has changed, you can update it by ticking the relevant box and changing it this year.

Address

Updating a client’s address on a tax return only changes the postal address for the client’s income tax. It doesn't update our client register covering all roles.

You need to notify us separately for these and other changes, such as:

  • residential address
  • activity statement address
  • business addresses.

Date of birth

We need the client’s full date of birth, not just the year of birth.

We recommend you confirm the date of birth with your client before lodging the return.

If a date of birth is incorrect only the client can update it. For more information, refer to Updating your details.

A1 under 18 (label J)

The common problem relating to this label, is where the label is completed and the client turned 18 on or before 30 June.

Only complete label J at A1 when the client is under 18 years at 30 June.
