If you are a sole trader running your own business, and you prepare your individual tax return yourself, why not consider using e-tax. It's free and it lets you prepare and lodge your individual tax return online. It also allows you to download and pre-fill your personal tax information directly into your return making it easier to meet your tax obligations and claim your entitlements. All you need to do is check the information and add any missing details.
Information that can be downloaded and pre-filled into your return using e-tax includes:
- pay as you go withholding (PAYGW) payment summaries
- government payments, including pensions and allowances
- interest income from all your accounts, including interest from savings, term deposits and joint accounts
- dividend income
- your private health insurance policy details
- Medicare information including some medical expenses.
From mid July, we will also include taxable payments made to you if you are in the building and construction industry.
E-tax is also fast, we will aim to finalise your return within 12 business days of receipt. If we are unable to finalise your return within 30 calendar days of receipt we will inform you.

You will need your Notice of assessment to use e-tax if you have previously lodged a tax return. If you don't have one, you may be able to use 'shared secret' information.
