GST cross-border transactions

On 12 May 2009, the Assistant Treasurer announced that the Board of Taxation (BoT) would undertake a review of the application of goods and services tax (GST) to cross-border transactions, in particular the extent of non-resident participation.

Following the BoT review the government announced in the 2010-11 Budget, it had accepted all the recommendations on the application of GST to cross-border transactions.

On 15 February 2011, the Assistant Treasurer released a discussion paper on the proposed changes for public comment.

The reforms to GST cross-border transactions will apply from the first quarterly tax period after royal assent.
