ELS - common errors

Increase text size Decrease text size

All software packages that meet our specifications must display certain messages sent by the electronic lodgment service (ELS) when a gateway encounters an error.

Each error message is identified by a number prefaced by a 'V' or a 'D', which indicates they have originated from a gateway.

Disconnection from the gateway

If ELS sends any one of the messages D01, D02, D03, D04, D05, D07, D11 or D12, you will be disconnected from ELS.

For more information about the gateways, refer to ELS gateways.

D01 - Invalid user ID or password

This refers to your ELS user ID and ELS password. It does not refer to:

  • your ISP or Dial IP network user ID or password
  • your access codes.

Usually, this is a password error, unless you are setting up for the first time - it is often caused by a password being updated by one software product and not another.

Different software products may be installed on the same computer system, or the same product may be installed on several computers.

Check the password in the software product that lodged most recently is the same as what is configured in the software product that experienced the error. You may request a password reset if you are not certain of your current password.

D02 - User ID is in use by someone else

This can be caused by an untidy exit from a previous lodgment lasting for two minutes after an unexpected disconnection.

Alternatively, another person, probably someone in your office or a secondary site, is connected with ELS using your user ID and password.

ELS does not allow simultaneous use of an account by more than one person. Ideally, a secondary site should be registered as a separate branch with the Tax Practitioners Board and have a unique ELS approval number. If neither of the above apply, contact us.

D03 - Too many failed log in attempts, account locked

You are allowed six tries at logging in with a correct password - if these all fail, your account will be locked by ELS. Contact us for assistance.

D04 - ATO file system problem

If you see this message, contact us.

D05 - Access to this account is denied

Your user profile account record is locked by another user.

This situation should only exist momentarily. If the problem persists, contact us.

D06 - Passwords do not match

Your software has tried to change your password, but a problem has been experienced. Contact us.

D07 - Software error

If you see this message, contact us.

D08 - Protocol violation

Your software has made an error - it has incorrectly responded to a message from ELS. Consult your software provider.

D09 - No response

Your software failed to respond to a message from ELS. You have received a 'no response' indication from ELS.

Try transmitting again. If the problem persists, contact us.

13 72 86 and use Fast Key Code 3 5

D10 - Transmission error

An error has occurred during transmission. The problem may be with your network configuration or software.

Try transmitting again, lodging a smaller number of returns. If the problem persists, contact us.

13 72 86 and use Fast Key Code 3 1

D11 - Access to this account is locked against Dial IP access

Your account has been locked from access to the Dial IP network. You must agree to the ATO recording the phone number (including the area code) you are using to access ELS via the Dial IP network. Your software package will display a message on the screen when you attempt to log in to ELS using the Dial IP network - you must agree to this message before the D11 error will go away.

If you do not agree to the ATO recording your phone number, you must use the internet.

D12 - Invalid IP address

Generally caused by using different credentials for Virtual Private Network (VPN) access (ATO access code 1) and the DIS application user ID. The last five numeric digits should be the same in both cases.

13 72 86 and use Fast Key Code 3 1

D13 - Checksum error

ELS has detected an error in a message sent by AUTELS mode software. If this occurs, consult your software provider.

Contact your software provider

D14 - Password has been used before

You have tried to change your password, but the new password you have selected has been used previously. Use a different, new password. If your new passwords are generated automatically, you may need a password reset.

13 72 86 and use Fast Key Code 3 1

D15 - Your password is invalid

Your software tried to change your ELS password, but the new password is invalid. An invalid password:

  • is less than eight or more than 16 characters long
  • contains illegal characters (any character other than 0-9 and A-Z, or other printable characters)
  • does not have at least one alphabetic and at least 1 numeric character.

Also: you cannot have more than two characters in the same position in your new password as your current password, or the same character more than three times in the new password.

Change your password selecting a valid new password, or select automatic password generation.
