Purpose

Terms of reference

The Active Compliance Working Group (ACWG) provides key stakeholders within the tax professional's industry and senior Australian Taxation Office (ATO) leaders with a forum for consultation and discussion on issues of mutual concern regarding the administration of the tax system.

The ACWG will operate under the guidance of the overall charter of the ATO Tax Practitioner's Forum (ATPF) but will specifically:

  • seek to improve active compliance work practices and procedures
  • act as a review and advisory group for feedback on future initiatives and approaches which impact on the ATOs active compliance activities in the community
  • provide a review and feedback point for matters (non individual case level) arising from the active compliance work program
  • discuss, review and provide feedback on case management and penalty policies and procedures arising from active compliance activities
  • provide a forum for shared discussion on the ATOs Change program as it impacts on active compliance activities and agents
  • seek ways to improve and assure the active compliance program which balance the needs of the community, tax agents and the Commissioner, and
  • it is recognised that the ACWG will focus on particular areas of interest to ensure that it is able to make real improvements on particular issues as they arise.

Governance and relationships

The forum approver is Second Commissioner, Compliance.

The ACWG has a subsidiary relationship with the ATPF.

The ACWG will report annually to its peak forum its achievements during the year and its forward focus for the following year.
