7. Possible closure of Regional Tax Office sites and effect on audits

Members Query:

Issue: Are the ATO considering closing regional offices? If they do how will audits be done, that is will they be done by telephone or in person?

Background: We have already been through the impact of the closure of the Rockhampton Office. Tax Professionals have heard unconfirmed messages that the ATO are considering closing other regional offices. This would cause more stress and inefficiencies, as Tax Agents need to be able to talk to ATO Officers who live in the local area. These Officers have the "feel" of the local area and can more quickly deal with issues. This is particularly important in country Queensland which is subject, from time to time, to natural disasters.

If audits are conducted by telephone, tax agents will have restricted input and the taxpayer will be disadvantaged.

Desired outcome/solution: Do not close regional offices, and continue to conduct audits in person (field) wherever possible

ATO Response:

Thank you for the matters you raised in regard to the possible closure of Regional Tax Office sites and the effect on audits.

The program of work undertaken by our Regional Tax Offices is based on being visible in the community through field interaction and a focus on supporting the community through help and assistance. Our program of work continues to include a mix of education and assistance activities, some compliance work and interaction with intermediaries.

It should also be noted that currently compliance work in regional sites is also undertaken by ATO staff from outside of the region and telephone work from elsewhere in Australia and this will continue to take place.

Business decisions will always be made to deliver corporate outcomes.
