How ELS can help registered tax agents

You can add and delete clients and obtain client lists using ELS.

Adding and deleting clients

Use the ELS CU transaction to advise us when you are adding or deleting clients for income tax and activity statement purposes.

The ELS CU transaction also allows you to:

  • change a name for income tax purposes
  • update the address for service for income tax and activity statement purposes
  • request to receive activity statements for a client via ELS
  • request to cease receiving activity statements for a client via ELS
  • advise a taxpayer is deceased
  • advise a RNN for a specific year or further returns not necessary (FRNN) for all future years. You cannot input a RNN advice for super funds via the ELS.

The lodgment of a FRNN advice will not remove the registered agent number from the clients' records.

Your software provider may have integrated these options with existing functions. For example, when you register a new client your package may automatically forward the details to us using the CU transaction.

How to complete a CU transaction

You can select multiple options on a single CU transaction following the rules in this list:

  • appointment and deletion of tax agent cannot be selected together
  • change of address and deletion of tax agent cannot be selected together
  • RNN or FRNN cannot be selected together
  • 'request to receive activity statements via ELS' and 'request to cease receiving activity statements via ELS' cannot be selected together
  • the name of the taxpayer must be included in all cases
  • the sex and date of birth must be included for all individual taxpayers
  • the reasons field is free text, and must be completed whenever the FRNN or RNN option has been selected
  • the TFN must be included for income tax (IT) purposes or when both IT and activity statement (AS) are selected. The TFN is optional where 'only for activity statement purposes' is selected but you must include either the TFN or the ABN.

Accessing client lists

You can obtain reports through the ELS, including client lists and due lodgment reports. The ELS reports can take up to three days to generate, and those available are:

  • Income tax client list (CL) - a solicited report that provides details of income tax clients attached to a registered tax agent
  • Activity statement client list (AS) - a solicited report that provides details of activity statement clients attached to a registered tax agent
  • Activity statement summary report (OM) - an unsolicited report that provides a list of all activity statements issued to clients (paper or ELS) in the monthly activity statement generation. The list includes the pre-printed information on the activity statements
  • Activity statement lodgment report (OL) - an unsolicited report that provides the lodgment status of the client's activity statements for the previous six months
  • Due lodgment report (DL) - an unsolicited report that is a specific 'not lodged' client list for designated program end dates and will be generated via ELS approximately six weeks prior to the upcoming end date.

You can request unsolicited ELS reports (Activity statement summary report (OM), Activity statement lodgment report (OL) and Due lodgment report (DL)) using the form RR (Request report). You only need to request these reports once - for example, after initially requesting the Due lodgment report, you will receive this report approximately six weeks prior to each lodgment program due date. Solicited reports are requested each time they are needed.

Many ELS software products allow you to sort the ELS reports/lists and the ELS client lists can be downloaded into Excel where you can filter them (as per the filtering instructions for Tax Agent Portal reports).
