The fastest way to update your name, address and contact details, and to nominate a representative to deal with us on your behalf, is over the phone.

To update these details with us, either:

  • phone 13 28 61 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday
  • phone +61 2 6216 1111 between 8.00am to 5.00pm and ask to be transferred to 'Personal tax enquiries' if you are calling from overseas.

When you phone, you must establish your identity by providing details of three of the following items that are currently on our records:

  • your date of birth
  • your phone number, business, residential, postal or email address (maximum of one)
  • your bank account number (BSB number not required)
  • details from our notices (maximum of two different notices) - for example, the sequence number from any notice of assessment (NOA) issued to you.

To help with your enquiry, you may also provide your tax file number (TFN). Although it is not legally required, it will make it quicker and easier for us to help you. If you would like someone else, such as a friend, family member or registered tax agent to update your details, they must be already recorded with us as being authorised to act for you. Once we establish your identity, we will update your records with your new details immediately.

Mail

You may update your details by downloading and completing the form Change of details for individuals (NAT 2817, 249KB). You can then mail it to the address on the form.

It can take up to 28 days to update your records after we receive the form.

In person

You may visit one of our shopfronts and our staff will help you to update your details.

We must establish your identity in the same way as for phone contact. You may bring an identity document that has your photograph on it, such as a passport or driver's licence, to help identify yourself.

Once we establish your identity we will update your records with your new details immediately.

To make an appointment at your nearest shopfront, phone us on 13 28 61.

Date of birth

If we have recorded your date of birth incorrectly, you can ask us to change it.

Phone

In most cases we will be able to help you more quickly by updating your date of birth over the phone. This will depend on your history of dealing with us and what documents we have seen in the past. To update your date of birth either:

  • phone 13 28 61 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday
  • phone +61 2 6216 1111 between 8.00am to 5.00pm and ask to be transferred to 'Personal tax enquiries' if you are calling from overseas.

Attention icon

Before you phone make sure to have your identity document, as listed below, with you. Even if you don't have your documents handy it still may be possible to make the update over the phone - this will depend on your history of dealing with us, and what documents we have seen in the past. If we are unable to make the changes over the phone we will provide you with details of other options for updating your date of birth.

Identity documents that can be verified over the phone include:

  • Australian birth certificate (not an extract)
  • Australian citizenship certificate
  • Australian passport
  • Australian Visa (using information from your overseas passport)
  • Australian drivers licence.

If your name recorded on your identity document differs to your current or previous name on our records, we also need to verify a document that supports your change of name, such as:

  • marriage certificate
  • change of name certificate.

We will verify the proof of identity details provided with the agencies who issue them.

Mail or in person

If you can't update your date of birth over the phone, you may update your details by downloading and completing the form Update date of birth (NAT 74280, 252KB).

You can lodge your completed application with the current original or certified supporting documents outlined on the form to us by:

  • visiting your nearest shopfront- phone 13 28 61 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, to make an appointment
  • mailing it to the address on the form.

It can take up to 28 days to update your records after we receive the form.

Gender (sex)

If we have recorded your gender (sex) code incorrectly, you can ask us to change it.

You can ask us to change the gender we have on file if you have completed surgical reassignment and are now living as your reassigned gender.

If you are accepted in the community as a person of the opposite sex, but haven't had all the surgery required to complete gender reassignment, we are able to help by:

  • changing your name
  • updating your title to one that is not gender-specific
  • removing the title from the record.

Phone

We cannot change your recorded gender over the phone.

We can change your name or title - see Name, address, contact details and nominating a representative.

Mail

Write to us, and include all of the following:

  • your name and address that we have recorded for you
  • your new name - and title if required
  • a request that we recognise your reassigned gender
  • your signature and your supporting document, such as a
    • recognition certificate or updated birth certificate from an Australian Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages
    • recognition certificate issued by a foreign government authority.

If you are unable to provide this documentation we may accept a statutory declaration from two Australian doctors verifying that you have undergone sexual reassignment surgery. However, these declarations will require the doctors' details and Medicare number.

If you are in Australia, provide us with the original document. If you are outside Australia, send us a certified copy - refer to Copies of documents - applicants outside Australia.
