Secondary school education program

We are committed to educating students about tax and super, and to working with teachers to achieve this. Our secondary school education program helps students become prepared and educated about entering and interacting with the tax system.

The program has three main elements:

  • the secondary school tax file number (TFN) program
  • tax and super educational resources
  • school visits.

Secondary school TFN program

The easiest way for secondary students to get their TFN is through the school TFN program, which is available through most secondary schools around Australia.

When a student applies for a TFN through their school, they do not have to provide us with any documents to prove their identity because this is confirmed through their school records. They do need to include details on their application form from their Australian birth or citizenship certificate, or their Australian or foreign passport.

Schools check that the student's details on the form match school records and, once completed and certified, the applications are sent to us for processing.

Each year we receive over 120,000 applications for a TFN through this program.

Is your school part of the program?

Generally, your school's careers advisor or office staff can tell you if your school is part of the program. If they're not sure, or your school wants to participate in the program, contact your nearest shopfront by phoning 13 28 69 between 8.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. We'll send you an agreement form and information kit which provides all the information needed to deliver the program.
