Starting a new job

When starting a new job your employer will ask you for your tax file number (TFN). They may also ask you to choose where you want your super paid. You can:

  • continue to use an account you already have (from a previous job)
  • set up an account with a new super fund
  • choose the super fund your employer offers (this is called a 'default' fund) and establish a new account.

You can usually use the same fund your whole working life. Having one account can save you hundreds of dollars in fees and simplify your paperwork. Consider using SuperSeeker to transfer your super into one account online.

SuperSeeker is a free, online search tool. You can use SuperSeeker to:

  • check your current super accounts that money has been paid into in the last two years
  • find lost super - there are billions in lost super dollars; see if some of it is yours
  • find ATO-held super - if the government, your super fund or your employer can't find an account to transfer your money to, we hold it on your behalf
  • transfer your super into the super fund you want.
