Claiming the tax-free threshold
You can claim the tax-free threshold to reduce the amount of tax that is withheld from your pay during the year. If you have income from two payers you generally claim the tax-free threshold from only one.
Tax-free threshold for newcomers to Australia
If you are an Australian resident for tax purposes for a full year, you pay no tax on the first $18,200 of your income. This is called the tax-free threshold.
Tax-free threshold if you are leaving Australia with the intention to reside overseas
If you are leaving Australia with the intention to reside overseas, your tax-free threshold for the year will be lower than the threshold available to most taxpayers who are Australian residents for the full year.
