• Every year counts – privately owned and wealthy groups

We're working to improve your experience of the tax and superannuation systems based on what you told us you needed. The blueprint outlines how the ATO is reinventing the experience you have.

Some changes will happen in the near future and others will take longer. We want to make every year count, so you'll see a program of improvements being delivered now and in the years ahead.

You can read more about our changes and how we're improving below or download the Every year counts timeline for privately owned and wealthy groups (Portable Document Format 273 KB).This link will download a file

    Improvements in 2016–17

Here are key initiatives you've told us are important that have been or will be delivered in 2016–17:

    • Tailored information on ato.gov.au – you and your advisers can now use the Private Groups option under the Business tab on our website to find more specific information and services.
    • SMSF Certainty – you and your advisers have a new way to approach us to talk about serious SMSF compliance issues and have these quickly resolved.
    • Increased certainty through safe harbours– you and your advisers have increased certainty around tax and super issues because we provide clear boundaries in the application of tax and super law.
    • Improving access to government online services – your business can nominate other representatives to act on behalf of your entity, in full or limited capacity.

In addition to the experience outlined above, you may be involved in consultation and co-design activities on, such as:

    • Contemporary online excise – we are working with excise payers and representatives to co-design a contemporary online excise experience.
    • Your client profile – we are working with business and your advisers to design an integrated view of your tax and super.
    • Whole-of-government approach to resolve private group key issues – we will work with business and your advisers to understand where improvements can be made to support the resolution of key issues across government for private groups; for example, winding up a private group.

    Improvements in 2015–16

In 2015–16, we focused on fixing the basics and delivered new, tailored services to transform how you deal with us and give you certainty about where you stand.

We’ve been working with you and your advisers to be transparent and give you certainty about where you stand with your tax and super – knowing what attracts our attention, working to resolve issues early and engaging one-on-one with the largest privately owned groups.

    In 2015–16, we delivered:

    • more certainty about your tax affairs by issuing you with an income tax assurance notification if you have a low level of risk
    • income tax risk reports to let you and your adviser know what’s attracting our attention
    • an online guide to help you develop a governance framework to identify, assess and mitigate your tax risk.
