    Every year counts – self-managed super funds

    We're working to improve your experience of the tax and superannuation systems based on what you told us you needed. The blueprint outlines how the ATO is reinventing the experience you have

    Some changes will happen in the near future and others will take longer. We want to make every year count, so you'll see a program of improvements being delivered now and in the years ahead.

    Improvements in 2016–17

    Here are the key initiatives you've told us are important that have been or will be delivered in 2016–17:

    Increased certainty through safe harbours – you and your advisers have increased certainty around tax and superannuation issues because we provide clearer boundaries in the application of tax and super law. In addition to the experience outlined above, we may be involved in consultation and co-design activities on the following key improvements:

    • Simplified SMSF registration and wind-up process – you can easily register and wind up your SMSF in one streamlined interaction with us.
    • Online SMSF registration and change of details – you can register and change your SMSF's trustees, members or bank account details instantly online.

    Improvements in 2015–16

    In 2015–16, we focused on fixing the basics and delivered new, tailored services to transform how you deal with us and give you certainty about where you stand.

    We worked with the industry to ensure that you have a say on technical issues and we address the key irritants you've told us about.

    In 2015–16, we delivered:

    • a new voluntary disclosure process to resolve issues early
    • more online information to help you understand and meet your responsibilities
    • certainty regarding safe harbours for limited recourse borrowing arrangements.
