End of attention
The Australian Government Information Publication Scheme (IPS) was established as part of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act). The Act requires each agency to:
- publish a broad range of information on their website
- make that information available in an accessible format where possible.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is an independent statutory agency within the Treasury portfolio. It operates under the Public Service Act 1999 and the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997.
The Commissioner of Taxation is responsible for the general administration of a wide range of taxation and superannuation legislation. Under the Australian business number legislation, the Commissioner is also the Australian Business Registrar.
We have taken a strategic approach to implementing amendments to the FOI Act, including the IPS entry, providing us with a significant opportunity to strengthen our governance and organisational culture. This will both further the principles and objects of the FOI Act as well as meet the specific legislated requirements. The approach is also consistent with our value of openness and accountability.
