Supporting better environmental outcomes
Several measures we administer support better environmental outcomes for Australians.
Under the cleaner fuels grants scheme, we pay grants to licensed manufacturers and distributors of biodiesel and renewable diesel. In 2012–13, we paid grants relating to the production of 116.2 million litres of biodiesel.
Under the product stewardship for oil program, we collect a levy from manufacturers of relevant new mineral oils and recycled products, and pay a grant to recyclers of used oil. We do this on behalf of the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities. This scheme encourages the environmentally sustainable management and refining of used oil and its reuse. In 2012–13, we paid grants relating to 288.1 million litres of recycled oil.
From 1 July 2012, entitlements under the fuel tax credit scheme were reduced for most claimants as a consequence of new measures. We have a role in administering several measures under the initiative, including administering a deduction for capital expenditure incurred in establishing carbon sink forests for the primary purpose of sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
We work with industry to understand and minimise the compliance burden of participating in these initiatives.
