By 30 June, we reviewed our consultative arrangements resulting in a reduction in the number of forums from 68 to eight. These eight stewardship committees will focus on engaging with representatives of the community, industry and the tax profession. Their role is to consult on high level significant matters and to provide opportunities to discuss the strategic direction of the tax and superannuation systems. In addition, our new consultative arrangements will include engaging in key stakeholder relationship groups, special purpose or technical working groups, focus groups, open forums and online discussions.
During the year we consulted with software developers as early as possible to allow for policy and legislative changes to be included in the design of their software products.
The Council of Small Business Australia (COSBOA) stated, in its response to the Productivity Commission's Study into regulator engagement with small business (March 2013):
The ATO is a prime example of an agency who engages with industry. The ATO has various consultative forums where they actively seek information and advice ... They consult with industry at all levels and they get the difference between big and small business.
