  • Appendix 6: Compensation statistics

The information below only relates to compensation under the Commonwealth’s Scheme for Compensation for Detriment caused by Defective Administration.

Under the Commonwealth’s Scheme for Compensation for Detriment caused by Defective Administration, compensation may be paid to an individual, company or other organisation that has experienced detriment as a result of our defective actions or inaction.

Payments under the scheme are discretionary and the table below provides details of payments made by us under the scheme in 2016–17.

    Compensation claims

We have internal service targets for processing compensation claims. In 2016–17, we aimed to process claims within 56 days. Some claims take longer to investigate due to their complexity.

In 2016–17, we registered 190 and finalised 192 compensation claims, with 79 resulting in compensation being offered. An additional 17 payments were made as a result of a streamlined claim process.
