We are authorised by the Taxation Administration Act 1953 to request tax file numbers (TFNs). We will use your TFN to identify you in our records. It is not an offence not to provide your TFN but if you don't there may be a delay processing this form.

We are also authorised by the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 to collect the information requested in the ABN applicationExternal Link. This information will be used to update your name, address and contact details for taxation and superannuation purposes. If you don't provide the information, we may not be able to process your form.

Where you have nominated a representative, we will also use this information to help us deal with your representative about your taxation and superannuation affairs on your behalf.

Where authorised by law, we may give this information to other government departments and agencies, including:

  • Services Australia
  • Department of Education
  • Department of Employment
  • Department of Social Services
  • Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
  • Department of Home Affairs
  • Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics
  • Law Enforcement Agencies.

We also provide taxpayer information to treaty partners overseas under international tax agreements.
