Requesting your TFN

Under the Taxation Administration Act 1953, we can legally request tax file numbers (TFNs). We use the TFN and other information provided in the copies of tax documents request form to identify the person or relevant entity in our records.

If you don't provide a TFN, it is not an offence, but there may be a delay processing this form.

Sharing your information

Where we can legally do so, we may give this information to other government departments and agencies, including:

• Services Australia
• Australian Bureau of Statistics
• law enforcement agencies.

We also provide taxpayer information to treaty partners overseas under international tax agreements.
