  • Support for large businesses impacted by COVID-19

    We recognise that many large businesses and their employees are currently being impacted by COVID-19 and that your ability to meet your tax obligations may be adversely impacted. We are focused on supporting the community through this period of disruption and uncertainty.

    Tailored support available

    We issued a media release on 12 March 2020 outlining administrative measures to assist Australians experiencing financial difficulties as a result of COVID-19.

    These arrangements will not be automatically applied. If your business is affected and you require support, contact the Large Service Team. We can tailor arrangements to allow you to continue to manage and meet your tax obligations. If you have an existing dedicated ATO relationship manager, you can also contact them for assistance.

    Tailored support arrangements may include:

    • payment deferral
    • adjustments to the GST reporting cycle
    • PAYG variation
    • interest and penalty remission.

    Employers will need to meet their ongoing super guarantee obligations for their employees.

    We recognise there may be other issues that are arising for you. We have prepared a list of commonly asked tax questions regarding COVID-19 available on our website.

    The FAQ page will be kept updated and you can email us at COVID-19Taxissues@ato.gov.au if you have suggestions about other additional questions the community needs answers to.

    A tailored compliance program

    Our priority is to provide support to businesses in these difficult times. Based on feedback from large businesses and their advisers we understand the circumstances and needs vary significantly between large businesses.

    We are, therefore, focussing on providing a client experience designed for the individual circumstances of each large business.

    We have been contacting every large business subject to an assurance or compliance activity to understand their preferences. We will continue to monitor the changing circumstances and will work with large businesses and advisers and make further adjustments to our activities as required.

    Our PAG approach

    Our public advice and guidance program is currently focused on advice relating to COVID-19 and the tax and super aspects of the government's economic response. This may mean other advice and guidance products may be delayed, we will provide updates if we make revisions to our scheduling via our Advice under development program on our website.
