Education sessions for foreign investors and advisors

We are running a series of education sessions from March to May 2016 designed to help foreign investors and their advisors understand Australian tax obligations and the new foreign investment rules.

The education sessions have been developed in response to community feedback and reflect the ATO's commitment to improving our clients' experience, providing contemporary, personalised services.

These sessions will be held in English and Mandarin for professional advisors, and in English, Cantonese and Mandarin for individual investors.

ATO experts will guide you through the following topics:

  • changes to the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975 (FATA) rules for investment in Australia and what these changes mean for you
  • how your residency status impacts on your tax obligations
  • what your Australian tax obligations are and how to ensure you are compliant
  • what worldwide income means
  • rental income
  • Capital Gains Tax (CGT) upon sale of Australian assets
  • Goods and Services Tax (GST)
  • deductions
  • Australia’s international tax agreements and how they may impact you

There will be an opportunity to ask questions after the session.

Who should attend?

Real estate agents, property developers, tax agents, accountants, lawyers, migration agents and other professionals with clients that have large investments in Australia should attend a professional session. You may wish to invite your clients to this session.

Individual taxpayers and/or investors in Australian property are encouraged to forward this invitation to clients, colleagues and friends who may also benefit from attending a session.
