  • Your data and the privacy code

    In order to administer the tax and superannuation system, we collect information from taxpayers and third parties including other government agencies and financial institutions.

    We only collect personal information about you where it is necessary for, or directly related to their functions and activities which include:

    • administering the taxation and superannuation laws
    • administering the Australian Business Register
    • the Commissioner of Taxation’s functions and activities as an employer.

    Our data matching programs help us efficiently administer the tax system to ensure it remains fair for everyone. We comply with strict privacy laws that govern the way data can be disclosed and used.

    What you need to know

    Under the privacy code, we are obliged to:

    • take reasonable steps to implement practices, procedures and systems that will ensure the entity complies with the APPs and any binding registered APP code, and is able to deal with related inquiries and complaints
    • have a clearly expressed and up-to-date privacy policy about how the entity manages personal information
    • take reasonable steps to make its privacy policy available free of charge in an appropriate form and, upon request, in a particular form.

    You have the opportunity to place a complaint if you do not think we have handled your information within the law. We will work with you to resolve your complaint and keep you informed of its progress.

    If you are not satisfied with how we deal with your complaint, the Privacy Commissioner at the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner may be able to help you.
