    How registration works

When you apply for an ABN you can also apply for the tax registrations you need. For some registrations, such as fringe benefits tax, we may ask you for more information.

When you receive your ABN, your business is added to the Australian Business Register. Your clients and suppliers can then use ABN lookupExternal Link  to verify your ABN, business name and GST status.

    If you register online:

    • you usually receive your ABN immediately if you
      • have never registered for an ABN before
      • provide complete and accurate information to establish your identity and entitlement to an ABN
    • you can apply for an AUSkey, which means you can transact online with us and update your details online
    • individuals and companies can register their business name.

Government organisations can't register online. They must order the form ABN registration for companies, partnerships, trusts and other organisations (NAT 2939).

Some applications may require manual processing and may take up to 20 business days. If you want to enquire about the progress of your ABN application, allow 20 business days before contacting us.

    What you need

You provide the following information when you register for an ABN:

    • entity type - for example, sole trader or partnership
    • contact details
    • bank account details
    • details of associates such as the public officer of a company, directors, partners, members or trustees – if an associate is not themselves registered with us we will also need to verify their identity documents as if they were registering themselves.

If you're registering as an individual (sole trader), it will speed things up if you provide your personal tax file number (TFN).

If you're registering a company or other incorporated body, you should provide the Australian company number (ACN) or Australian registered body number (ARBN). These are issued by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

If you need other tax registrations in addition to the ABN, you may need to provide additional information.

When applying for an ABN it's important that the information you provide is true and correct. Making a false or misleading statement to the Australian Business Register may result in a penalty of up to $10,200. Refer to Penalties for false or misleading statements made to the Australian Business RegisterExternal Link .
