    In 2006, 6,800 (6%) of employed Indigenous people were self-employed. This compares with 17% of employed non-Indigenous people.10 To reach the equivalent proportion of self-employed non-Indigenous people, the number of Indigenous self-employed would need to increase to 20,000.

    89% (6,044) of self-employed Indigenous people were located in major cities and regional areas and 11% (756) were in remote areas.

    While the majority of Indigenous Australians live, work and conduct businesses in urban or semi-urban areas, there is very little research or focus on these areas.11
