    Summary of key issues

    The Tobacco Stakeholder Group met on 11 July 2019. The meeting was attended by representatives from Philip Morris International, Imperial Tobacco Australia, British American Tobacco Australia, the Treasury, Australian Border Force and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

    The key issue discussed at the meeting related to the implementation of tobacco-related measures announced in the 2018 budget.

    The ATO reported on the implementation of new arrangements which requires importers of tobacco product to pay duty and tax liabilities when that product enters the country. This had been announcedExternal Link in the 2018 budget. From 1 July 2019, the taxing point has moved to the border for all tobacco products.

    This was the final meeting of the ATO’s Tobacco Stakeholder Group. Future ATO engagement in relation to illicit tobacco would be via the Department of Home Affairs’ Illicit Tobacco Advisory GroupExternal Link.
