  • Single Touch Payroll Employer Transition Working Group key messages 6 September 2022

    Chair Chontelle Weyman welcomed members and attendees to the September Single Touch Payroll (STP) Employer Transition Working Group meeting.

    Digital service provider update

    Travis Wright from the ATO provided an update on digital service provider (DSP) readiness and testing, noting the following:

    • We now have approximately 215 products that have been whitelisted for Phase 2 reporting, with a further 60 in testing phase. Recognising that not all whitelisted products have started transition their clients to Phase 2 reporting.
    • With many DSP products ready and more data available, our focus is shifting towards the data assurance, including the initial STP Phase 2 production data for newly whitelisted products.
    • There have been a few requests for deferral extensions from DSPs. Any new deferral requests or deferral extensions are assessed on a case-by-case basis, recognising some of the tax time challenges and peak in testing.

    Employer transition and engagement

    Chontelle provided the group an update on the Phase 2 employer transition and engagement activities, noting;

    • As of 5 September 2022, we have over 222,000 employers reporting through STP Phase 2 for over 3.7 million employees.
    • A correspondence campaign was conducted in August, where tailored letters were sent to employers to encourage them to onboard if their product was ready or to start preparing. A similar campaign will be repeated in October 2022, along with another client list being sent to all BAS and Tax agents.
    • We have continued to support various external speaking engagements, such as participating in the DSP Australia and New Zealand webinar week.
    • The new STP Phase 2 reporting help web content and videos are being heavily promoted throughout September using the ATO’s existing channels, such as the small business newsroom.

    Industry updates

    Members were asked if they had heard any community or stakeholder sentiments from their networks regarding STP Phase 2, noting;

    • Members raised concern about employers becoming frustrated with delays in product readiness.
    • We are aware some DSPs have been delayed in their transition, the ATO have been supporting the DSPs with the messaging about the delays to their clients.

    Other business

    • Chontelle thanked members for their attendance and closed the meeting.
