  • Small Business Technical Working Group key messages 2 July 2018

    The Small Business Technical Working Group met on 2 July 2018 and discussed:

    • 12-month pilot expanding the independent review process to eligible small businesses.
    • How the ATO is supporting small businesses and their advisers to make it easy to meet their obligations at tax time.
    • Proposed laws to Address Corporate Misuse of the Fair Entitlements Guarantee scheme.
    • Legislative bills announced to commence on or before 1 July 2018 that were yet to pass through Parliament.
    • The package of 10 measures announced by Government in the 2018-19 Federal Budget to tackle the black economy.
    • The Board of Taxation consultation guide on their review of small business tax concessions, final report expected in 2019.
    • Mandatory Single Touch Payroll reporting for employers with 20 or more employees and the range of potential solutions being explored for those in the micro employer market.

    The group members were also invited to:

    • Provide comments on a range of potential topics raised by the group through a stocktake exercise to help inform priority issues for future discussions.
    • Put forward suggestions for potential safe harbours (i.e. practical approaches developed to complying with statutory provisions in recognition of complexity or unduly high compliance costs) for small business.

    Post meeting, the members have been invited by the Chair to provide their views on moving the Small Business Technical Working Group to have a more practical and operative focus that identifies, considers and develops, practical and workable solutions to make voluntary compliance easier for small businesses.
