  • 5 June 2017

The first meeting of the Tax Profession Digital Implementation Group (formally the Future of Tax Profession 2015–2016 working group) was held on Monday 5 June 2017 via video conference.

The information below is a summary of discussion at the meeting.

    Practitioner lodgment service transition update

    • In May 2017, 30% of transactions were being lodged via the practitioner lodgment service (PLS).
    • Over 8000 unique users have already lodged (at least once) via PLS.
    • Uptake is steadily increasing overall.
    • The ATO anticipates 50% of lodgments will be received via PLS by July 2017.

The ATO is providing one on one support to DSPs throughout the transition, and ABSIA and the ATO convene fortnightly meetings with DSPs to progress transition matters.

Further responsibilities in relation to PLS implementation and readiness include the need to:

    • develop and agree on a business process and road map to provide transparency of when all forms, services and reports will be removed from the Electronic Lodgment Service (ELS)
    • establish an ATO position to manage the expectations of clients of DSPs who may not be ready, and communicate this early and broadly with the help of associations to ensure clients of any DSPs are aware of the challenges and mitigation options in advance of potential impact to their business.
    • ensure upcoming ATO communication products provide further support to tax professionals in relation to the transition and include practical information about the differences between ELS and PLS as well as ELS form switch off dates.
