  • Instructions for using Form Client 5 software

Form Client 5 software is used by the electronic forms (Form Client 5 forms) available on our website. The software is downloaded with the first form you open and installed on your computer. It is needed to open the form and operate the 'intelligent validation' built into each form and to submit electronically.

    On this page:

    Downloading the software

The Form Client 5 software allows the electronic forms to be viewed and completed in a browser environment, and it is packaged into a number of cabinet (CAB) files.

These CAB files are hosted on the ATO web server. They are downloaded and installed on your computer when you first open one of the electronic forms. This is a once-only installation and won't be run again unless the CAB files on the server have been updated.

For Window XP computers, there are four main CAB files:

    • Adobe Form Control
    • Adobe Script Object Class
    • PLSAddin Class
    • Adobe Soft Font Installer.

Some forms may require other or additional files.

For Window 7 computers, the CAB files are unpacked according to the list below:

    • FontInstaller.dll
    • FontInstaller.inf
    • eng.clx
    • eng.lex
    • eng.phn
    • plsspeller.dll
    • plsspeller.hlp
    • PLSSpeller.inf
    • axscrcalc.dll
    • bmpflt32.dll
    • EUCresen.dll
    • FileDlg.dll
    • FormCtl.dll
    • FormCtl.inf
    • gifflt32.dll
    • IEncryption.dll
    • iocom.dll
    • jf4calc.dll
    • jfaddin.dll
    • jfBoiler.dll
    • jfControls.dll
    • jfDataSource.dll
    • jfDateTime.dll
    • jfForceUpdate.dll
    • jfMaskedEdit.dll
    • jpgflt32.dll
    • resourcesen.dll
    • RichEdit.dll
    • SvrCopy.dll
    • tifflt32.dll
    • xftcom.dll
    • XMLSubmit.dll
    • xocom.dll
    • ScriptObject.dll
    • ScriptObject.inf

    Removing the software

You can remove the Form Client 5 software by following the steps below for Internet Explorer (IE):

    • open the IE browser
    • select Tools on the menu bar
    • select Internet options
    • select the General tab
    • click on the Settings button
    • click on the View Objects button
    • highlight the cab file
    • select File from the menu bar
    • select Remove program file.

Repeat the last three steps until all the cab files are removed.

Warning: Do not remove any non-Form Client 5 program files – this could affect other programs on your computer.

    Obtaining an electronic form

    First time user

You can select from the list of electronic forms or go directly to the download page of whichever form you require. The first time a Form Client 5 form is opened, the software, comprising a number of CAB files, will automatically be downloaded with the form. This one-off download and installation may take more than 20 minutes, depending on your modem and connection speed. You will eventually be prompted to accept the installation of each file.

Please wait until this process is complete and make sure you answer the prompts by selecting the 'Yes' button. The download will continue even after the form first appears on-screen. You should receive four prompts, more if other files are used in the form, before the download is complete.

You should only need to do this once as the CAB files will then be installed and used to open any other Form Client 5 forms downloaded from our web site. The next form you use should load in a minute or less.

Once the CAB files have been installed, a form is very quick to open and this can be done by selecting the form hyperlink on the website, or by double clicking a form that was previously downloaded and saved to disk.

    Saving a blank form

You can save a copy of the blank form to your local drive for later use once the CAB files are installed properly. To save the form to a local drive:

    • return to the web page for that form
    • use the mouse to right-click on the link
    • select Save target as
    • select the folder in the drive where you want to save the form
    • click on the Save button.

The blank form will be saved as a file with an .htm file extension. Any data entered into the form will be saved into a separate file with an .xfd file extension.

Note: To ensure the saved form is up-to-date, check the electronic forms available regularly or sign up to our subscriptions service.

    Opening a form previously saved

If you have already saved a form it can be used at any time without needing to reconnect to our website.

To open the form, you can either:

    • use Windows Explorer to locate the form file (for example, C:\My documents\nat3133.htm) and then double click it. This will automatically load your default web browser and load the form
    • open your web browser and select File then Open from the menu. When the 'Open' dialogue box displays, select the Browse button. Locate the form you wish to use (for example, C:\My documents\nat3133.htm), then highlight the form and select Open and then OK.

    Navigating the form

    Menu buttons

Each form has several buttons which will appear at the top of Page 1. The layout and types of buttons available will, however, depend on the form and the page of the form being displayed.

    Mandatory fields

If you are using a transmittable form you will be unable to electronically transmit the form until all the mandatory fields are filled. You will receive a warning message advising that the field must be completed. The field(s) will be highlighted with a heavy grey or black border. If you don't complete the field, the form will not be able to be completed and/or transmitted.

In some instances, the field may only be mandatory if you intend to transmit the form. In such cases, it will be possible to complete the form and to print it, but you will not be able to transmit it electronically.

    Electronic transmission of form data

Some of the forms allow secure transmission of data to us via the internet, providing all mandatory fields have been completed.

Note: You will need to ensure that your browser has 128-bit cipher strength and an open internet connection at the time of transmission. For more details, see Form Client 5 system requirements.
