Troubleshooting JobMaker Hiring Credit errors in Single Touch Payroll

This list includes errors that may occur if an employer has incorrectly reported data in the Single Touch Payroll (STP)-enabled payroll software for the JobMaker Hiring Credit.

If we have contacted you to advise of an error in your STP data that you have submitted to us, you will need to either:

    • correct the error by following the instructions that relate to your error code, or
    • remove the allowance code that is triggering the error from your future STP pay events. If you are unsure how to remove the codes, contact your software provider.

See our JobMaker Hiring Credit guide for information on how to register, nominate employees and claim payments.

    1. STP Allowance Code invalid

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have entered an incorrect allowance code when nominating or declaring an employee for the JobMaker Hiring Credit.

The employee nomination or declaration has not been recognised, and changes will not be visible in your list of nominated employees in ATO online services. Check your previous submission and correct the information as needed. Include the updated codes in an update event or your next pay event using STP-enabled payroll software.

    2. Commencement Date invalid

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have entered an invalid commencement date (this includes having not provided a date) when nominating an employee for the JobMaker Hiring Credit.

The employee has not been recognised as nominated and will not be visible in your list of nominated employees in ATO online services. You will need to run another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, providing a valid commencement date.

    3. Cessation Date invalid

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have entered an invalid cessation date when an employee you have been claiming the JobMaker Hiring Credit for ceases working for you.

The employee has not been recognised as having ceased employment, and will still appear in your list of nominated employees in ATO online services. You will need to run another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, providing a valid cessation date.

    4. Nomination and Renomination overlap

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have renominated an employee for the JobMaker Hiring Credit, using a commencement date before the original nomination’s cessation date.

The employee has not been recognised as having been renominated, and will not appear in your list of nominated employees in ATO online services. You will need to run another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, providing a valid commencement or cessation date. The renominated employee’s new commencement date must be after their original cessation date.

    5. Declaration invalid

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have declared that an employee has met the hours requirement for the JobMaker Hiring Credit, but have either removed their nomination, or not yet nominated them.

The period declaration for the employee has not been acknowledged. You will first need to nominate or renominate your employee. Then run another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software to resubmit the relevant allowance code.

    6. Nomination and Renomination reported together

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have both nominated and renominated an employee for the JobMaker Hiring Credit in the same STP event.

Your list of nominated employees in ATO online services will not change. The employee will not be removed if they are already included, and will not be added if they are not already on the list. You will need to run another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, providing the correct code.

    7. Renomination received and Nomination not removed

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have renominated an employee for the JobMaker Hiring Credit without ceasing or removing their original nomination.

The renomination has not been acknowledged, and the employee’s nomination status will not be impacted. You cannot renominate an employee unless the previous nomination has been ceased or removed.

You can cease an employee’s nomination by running another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, reporting a cessation date.

If you have incorrectly nominated an employee, you can remove their nomination by running another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, using the allowance code JMHC-NOMX.

    8. Renomination without a Nomination

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have renominated an employee for the JobMaker Hiring Credit without having previously nominated them.

The employee has not been recognised as having been nominated and will not appear in your list of nominated employees in ATO online services. You will need to run another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, using the code JMHC-NOM to nominate the employee.

    9. Period Declaration after Cessation Date

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have declared that an employee has met the hours requirement for the JobMaker Hiring Credit for a JobMaker period after the employee’s cessation date.

The declaration has not been acknowledged, and the employee’s nomination status will not be impacted. If appropriate, you will need to renominate an employee after they have ceased employment to be able to declare they meet the JobMaker Hiring Credit employee eligibility requirements.

    10. Declaration added and removed together

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have both declared that an employee has met the hours requirement for the JobMaker Hiring Credit for a particular JobMaker period and removed that declaration in the same STP event.

The declaration has not been acknowledged, and the employee’s status will not be impacted. You cannot both submit and remove a declaration in the same pay event. You will need to run separate update events or pay events through your STP-enabled payroll software, entering the relevant codes.

    11. Nomination removed with active Declaration

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have removed an employee’s nomination after having declared that they have met the hours requirement for the JobMaker Hiring Credit for a particular JobMaker period.

The employee’s nomination status will be set to inactive, even with the declaration in place. The employee will not be included in any claim totals, as they must be nominated first. You will need to run another pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, using the code JMHC-NOM to nominate the employee.

    12. Unmatched client

    Reporting issue

    What you need to do

You have sent us employee information regarding the JobMaker Hiring Credit that we cannot identify.

We cannot confirm that the employee is eligible. Confirm with your employee that their identifying information is correct and encourage them to confirm their contact information with us. Once this occurs and you run an update event or pay event through your STP-enabled payroll software, the employee should be identified.

    13. Cancelled STP event with JMHC code

    Reporting issue

What you need to do allowance

The last STP event that was used to update your employee's eligibility for the JobMaker Hiring Credit scheme has been changed.

Submit all current and relevant JMHC codes in an update event or include in a scheduled pay event run through your STP-enabled payroll software to make sure your employees' eligibility is correctly recorded.
