  • After you have lodged

Now that you’ve lodged your tax return, we'll issue a notice of assessment (NoA). This tells you whether you're entitled to a refund or if you have an amount to pay.

If you have a myGov account linked to the ATO, your NoA will be sent to your myGov Inbox and you will receive an email or SMS telling you when it’s there. If you do not have a myGov account, you will receive your NOA in the mail.

Electronic returns are normally processed in two weeks. Paper returns are processed manually, taking up to 10 weeks. There is no way to speed up this process, even if you contact us.

You can continue to check the progress of your tax return by logging in to our online services via myGov at any time. This service provides the real-time status and outcome of your return, to indicate which processing stage it is at.

    If you have a debt

If you have a debt, the easiest way to pay is with BPAY® or a credit card using the relevant payment reference number to make sure your money goes to the right account.

If you can’t pay by the due date you can enter into a payment plan. You can set up a payment plan online through myGov or you can set up an automated payment plan through our automated phone services if your debt is less than $100,000. Phone us on 13 11 42 if your debt is more than $100,000.
