  • Medicare levy

Medicare gives Australian residents access to health care and is partly funded by taxpayers who pay a Medicare levy of 2% of their taxable income.

If you are entitled to Medicare benefits you may have to pay the Medicare levy. The Medicare levy is calculated from information provided in your tax return and the amount payable will be shown on your notice of assessment.

If you are a resident of Norfolk Island who is not entitled to Medicare benefits, you may qualify for an exemption from the Medicare levy. You will need to apply for a statement from the Department of Human Services to claim an exemption in your tax return.

The Norfolk Island exemption from paying the Medicare levy ceased on 1 July 2016.
