  • Tax file number

If you have a tax file number (TFN) you can lodge a tax return, apply for government benefits and get an Australian business number (ABN).

If you don't have a TFN, your employer will have to take more tax from your pay and your bank will take out tax from any interest you earn.

To apply for a TFN, visit the Office of the Administrator and complete a Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals (NAT 1432) form.

    You will need to provide:

    • one primary proof of identity document – such as a birth certificate, passport or Australian citizenship certificate
    • two secondary proof of identity documents – such as a drivers licence, marriage certificate, or bank statement.

It can take up to 28 days to receive your TFN after your application is lodged.

You cannot use the online application process through Australia Post on Norfolk Island.

Once you get a TFN, you need to keep it confidential so there is no possibility of misuse. Your TFN is how we identify you for tax and super purposes. It's yours for life, so don't let anyone else use it – not even friends or family.
