  • Get started with myGov and ATO online services

    Find out how to create an account and link to the ATO. You can manage your tax and super in one place using ATO online services for individuals and sole traders. Follow these steps:

    1. Create a myGov account
    2. Link your myGov account to the ATO
    3. Use ATO online services

    You can use our ATO online services simulator to test out the functions and features available in our online services before you sign up.

    1. Create a myGov account

    A myGov account lets you link to a range of Australian Government services using your email address. To create a myGov account:

    • visit my.gov.au
    • enter an email address that only you have access to – not a shared email
    • enter the security code sent to your email address
    • then either
      • enter your Australian mobile number to receive SMS security codes to sign in
      • download the myGov Code Generator app, if you don't have access to a mobile number.
       

    If you use 'Answer a secret question' as your sign-in option, you can't link to the ATO.

    2. Link your myGov account to the ATO

    Once you have a myGov account you can link to the ATO. Most people can link to ATO online services using questions specific to you. To do this:

    • log in to your myGov account
    • select the Services tab on the myGov home page
    • under the heading Link a service select Australian Taxation Office
    • select the option Questions specific to you to create a link to your record by answering two questions specific to you
    • enter your TFN, given name, family name and date of birth in the fields provided
    • read the Terms and conditions
    • tick the box I agree to the terms and conditions of use
    • select Next
    • you will then need to complete the details for two questions specific to you.

    Use the information below to help you determine the exact information you need and where you can find it.

    If you can't link to the ATO online using Questions specific to you, a message will explain this, and you will have to phone us to link your account. This happens if you don't have many records with us, such as if you have never lodged a tax return.

    Questions specific to you

    You will need to complete the details from two of the following using information we know about you. These options are:

    Bank account details

    Use either a bank account:

    • where you receive your income tax refund
    • that has earned interest in the last two years.

    You will need the:

    • BSB number (no spaces or symbols)
    • Account number (no spaces).

    You can usually find this information by logging in to in your bank's mobile app or web account or on your bank statement.

    If you have previously lodged your tax return with a tax agent, the bank account details on your account may be theirs. Use either a bank account that has earned interest instead or select a different question.

    PAYG payment summary

    Use a PAYG payment summary or income statement issued in the last two years.

    You will need your gross income in whole dollars, don't show cents (no spaces, $ or symbols).

    You can find these details on the annual statement your employer gives you.

    From 2018-19 and onwards your employer will provide your tax and payment information as an income statement in your myGov account. If you don't have a copy or know your gross income, select a different question.

    Centrelink payment summary

    Use a Centrelink payment summary issued in the last two years.

    You will need your taxable income in whole dollars, don't show cents (no spaces, $ or symbols). If your taxable income is zero, you can't use this question.

    You can find these details on the annual statement that Centrelink provides you.

    If your myGov account is linked to Services Australia, you can log in and get the details online. If you don’t have a copy or don't know your taxable income, select a different question.

    Notice of assessment

    Use a notice of assessment (NOA) you have that was issued in the last five years.

    You will need both the:

    • date of issue, (enter the date in the format dd/mm/yyyy)
    • our reference number (no spaces)

    You can find these details in the top righthand corner of your NOA.

    If you have previously had a myGov account linked to the ATO, your NOA will be sent to your myGov account. If you don't have a copy you will need to select a different question.

    Superannuation account details

    Use a superannuation account statement from the last five years.

    You will need your:

    • member account number (up to 16 characters)
    • Superfund's ABN

    If you don't have access to your super account statement, you can find these details on:

    • an email or letter from your fund
    • a membership card.

    If the superfund's ABN is not on one of these items, you can look them up at www.superfundlookup.gov.auExternal Link.

    If no money has been contributed to your super account in the last 12 months, your account may be inactive. Either use another super account or select a different question.

    Dividend statement

    Use a dividend statement from the last two years.

    You will need your investment reference number (include all numbers, no spaces).

    If you don't have a dividend statement, you may be able to find these details on an email or letter from your investment body. If you don’t have this information, select a different question.

    When you've answered two questions correctly, you will be linked to the ATO and be able to use ATO online services.

    3. Use ATO online services

    Once you have a myGov account linked to ATO online services you can use it to manage your tax and super.

    You can download the ATO app to access our online services on the go. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. You can also access myGov from your web browser or from the ATO homepage.

    Enrol your voiceprint

    If you use the ATO app you can enrol your voiceprint. This allows you to access our online services using your voice instead of entering your myGov username and password.

    To enrol your voiceprint:

    • download the ATO app from the App store or Google play
    • go to the Individuals tab
    • select Online services and follow the prompts to enrol your voice.

    You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play.

    Sign out of ATO online services

    When you finish using ATO online services, sign out of myGov. This will end active sessions with all linked services.

    • Select Return to the myGov from the top righthand corner of the page
    • Sign out from the top righthand corner of the page.

    You don't need to unlink. If you unlink from Australian Taxation Office services, you will need to relink to be able to:

    • access Australian Taxation Office services using myGov.
    • access any messages in your Inbox from us.
