  • Get started with myGov and ATO online services

ATO online services is a platform where individuals and sole traders can view and manage their tax and super information online. To get started with myGov and ATO online services you will first need to:

You can use our ATO online services simulator to test out the functions and features available in our online services before you sign up.

    Find out about:

    Create a myGov account

A myGov account lets you link to a range of Australian Government services using your email address. Each myGov account must have a unique email address. If you share an email address with someone else, only one of you can use that email to create an account.

To be able to link your myGov account to ATO online services, you must select a sign-in option using security codes. To do this you will need to either:

    • add your mobile number so you can receive security codes by SMS
    • download the myGov code generator app to receive security codes.

If you change your myGov sign-in option from security codes to 'Answer a secret question' you'll be unlinked from the ATO. You will not be able to access ATO online services or receive communications from us in your myGov Inbox.

You can recover your usernameExternal Link or recover your passwordExternal Link if you already have a myGov account but have forgotten your username or password.

You may also need to download the myGov code generator app to be able to receive security codes if you're:

    • going overseas or leaving Australia permanently, and
    • need to access your myGov account from outside Australia

    Next step:

Log in or create a myGov accountExternal Link

Link your myGov account to the ATO

Once you have created your myGov account, select the Services tab on the myGov home page then select Australian Taxation Office.

You will receive a prompt to update your sign-in option to use security codes if you didn't add your mobile number when creating your myGov account.

To link you'll need to provide additional information to identify your ATO record, including your given name, family name, TFN and date of birth.

You'll then need to confirm your identity by answering two questions specific to you, using information from two of the following, your:

    • notice of assessment from the last five years.
    • PAYG payment summary or income statement from the last two years.
    • superannuation account statement from the last five years.
    • dividend statement from the last two years.
    • Centrelink payment summary from the last two years.
    • bank account – this must be an account you've had your individual income tax refund paid to or one that has earned interest in the last two years.

If you're having trouble linking to the ATO

If you've followed the steps to link your account to the ATO and are receiving an error message, check our troubleshooting information for known systems issues and fixes.

However, you may not have enough information on your ATO record to answer two questions specific to you if you are either:

    • new to the tax system
    • haven't lodged regularly.

In this case you'll need to phone us to get a unique linking code. The linking code will help you complete the process of linking your myGov account to ATO online services.

When you phone, you will need to establish your identity. Make sure you have your identification information ready, such as your TFN, driver's licence or Medicare card.

If you are calling from outside Australia, phone +612 6216 3444.

If you can't access your myGov account

You may not be able to access your myGov account because either:

    • the 'receive a code by SMS' feature was turned on and you no longer have access to this Australian mobile phone number
    • you used the myGov Code Generator app to sign in and no longer have access to either the app or the device you installed it on (and don't have SMS codes turned on as a backup).

If one of these scenarios applies to you, and you don't see your circumstances changing, you'll need to create a new myGov account and link to the ATO again.

If you want to continue using the same email address, you'll need to phone the myGov helpdesk to have your email address released. Alternatively, you can create a new myGov account using a different email address.

If you are calling from outside Australia, phone the myGov helpdesk on +61 1300 169 468.

Accessing your myGov account while overseas

If you have an existing myGov account and want to access ATO online services while you're overseas, you can still sign in to myGov.

However, to sign in with a code sent by SMS, you'll need to:

    • use the same mobile phone number registered to your myGov account
    • be able to get the code by SMS, while outside Australia
    • connect to a mobile phone network compatible with your phone service provider.

If you can't get text messages while you're overseas, you'll need to change how you sign in. You can change your sign in option to use the myGov Code Generator app on your mobile device.

If you don't have the myGov Code Generator app, you can download it from the App Store or Google Play and then set it up.

The app is available to download while you're overseas. However, we recommend you set up the app and update your security settings before you travel. This avoids being locked out of your account if you lose access to your Australian mobile and myGov account.

    myGov code generator app

The myGov code generator app allows you to sign-in to your myGov account using a one-time use code.

The app is your best sign in option if you can't get SMS codes from your Australian mobile phone. This is useful if you:

    • are travelling overseas
    • are leaving Australia
    • have limited mobile reception
    • prefer using the app to get your code.

You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play. To set it up, you need to agree to the Terms of Use. During set up, the myGov code generator app will register in your myGov sign in settings. Be sure to use the same mobile device that you have the app downloaded on.
