    Create a myGov account

A myGov account lets you link to a range of Australian Government services using your email address.

To create a myGov account visit my.gov.auExternal Link and make sure:

    • you use an email address only you have access to, not a shared email
    • you add your Australian mobile number to receive SMS security codes to sign in
    • download the myGov Code Generator app, if you skip the step to add an Australian mobile number.

If you use the 'Answer a secret question' as your sign-in option, you won't be able to link to the ATO.

    Next step:

Link your myGov account to the ATO

You can link to the ATO yourself online without having to call us. Log in to your myGov account and follow the steps below to link:

    • select the Services tab on the myGov home page
    • under the heading 'link a service' select Australian Taxation Office
    • select the option – Questions specific to you, to answer two questions that identifies your ATO record
    • enter your TFN
    • read and accept the terms and conditions
    • select Next.

    Questions specific to you

Answer two questions about information from your ATO record as:

    • BSB and account number for a bank account where you receive your income tax refund
    • BSB and account number for a bank account that has earned interest in the last two years
    • date of issue and reference number from a notice of assessment from the last five years
    • gross income from a PAYG payment summary or income statement from the last two years
    • your member number and Superfund ABN, you can find this on your superannuation account statement from the last five years or
    • investment reference number from a dividend statement from the last two years
    • taxable income from a Centrelink payment summary from the last two years.

Once you've answered two questions correctly, you will be linked to the ATO and be able to use ATO online services.

If you do not have enough information to answer, you'll need to phone us on 13 28 61 to get a unique linking code and complete the process.

If you are calling from outside Australia, phone +612 6216 3444.

Before you phone, have your identification information ready. This could be your TFN, driver's licence or Medicare card.
