  • January 2018 ATO Impersonation scam report

    In the January 2018 ATO Impersonation scam report:

    • 1873 calls were received into the 1800 008 540 scam reporting hotline, and over 2000 emails were reported to reportemailfraud@ato.gov.au
    • 2819 scam reports were officially recorded
    • $39,832 was reported as paid to scammers with bank transfers being the most common payment method
    • clients who provided scammers with their personal identifying information (PII) totaled 25%.

    Chart 1 shows a comparison between email and phone reports received in 2018. The number of email reports in January was 1461. The number of phone reports in January was 1358.

    Chart 2: Reported ATO impersonation scammer delivery methods

    Chart 2 shows the percentage of scam reports received, broken down by the scam channels used to contact members of the public during January 2018.  Phone calls or voice messages accounted for 44% of scams with emails scams representing 56% of those reported.

    Chart 3 shows the total amount paid, method of payment and number of people who paid scammers in January 2018.• 4 paid $23399 via bank transfer• 3 paid $10333 via personal credit card• 1 paid $6000 by Bitcoin• 1 paid $100 via iTunes.

    What we're doing

    The ATO works closely with external organisations and retail outlets to educate the community on scams. It is the intelligence we receive from ongoing reporting of scams by the community that continues to assist us in initiating genuine scam disruption activity.

    We have recently collaborated with Apple in Australia to include a warning to customers on the reverse side of iTunes vouchers. This message reminds customers that iTunes vouchers 'cannot be used for any payments outside of the Australian App Store or iTunes Store, including payment of taxes'.

    Other international revenue collection agencies have leveraged our recent success in lobbying Apple for a warning on the back of iTunes cards and have now been replicated.
