  • May 2020 ATO impersonation scam report

    In the May 2020 ATO impersonation scam report:

    • 1,617 scam reports were recorded via our dedicated phone line
    • we received 2,061 online scam reports
    • 263 phishing scam emails were reported to reportemailfraud@ato.gov.auThis link opens in a new window
    • $56,750 was reported as being paid to scammers
    • bank transfers recorded the highest amount paid at $41,750
    • cardless cash recorded the highest number of payments
    • Google Play netted scammers $6,200
    • 175 clients provided scammers with sensitive personal identifying information (PII) in May. When a client advises they have provided sensitive PII, we assess potential consequences and apply protective measures to secure their tax and superannuation accounts where appropriate.
