  • Kimberley region fraud scheme

We are aware of a fraudulent scheme currently targeting people in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Through the scheme, people are told to enter incorrect information in their tax return to get a big refund that they are not entitled to.

In some cases the promoter of the scheme seeks an upfront payment in exchange for information on how to get a large refund from us. The promoter explains how the person can lodge their tax return electronically and what to fill in to get a refund.

In other cases the promoter pays an individual for their myGov login details and then lodges a false tax return using the myGov account.

To avoid being caught up in a fraudulent scheme, make sure you:

    • don't give your myGov login details to anyone
    • check your tax agent is registered by visiting Tax Practitioners BoardExternal Link
    • know your tax affairs – you can log into myGov to check your tax affairs at any time, including reviewing your return and refund details.

You are responsible for what you put in your tax return. If you get a refund you are not entitled to, you will need to pay it back.

If you think you have been caught up in this scheme, we will help you – phone us on 13 28 61 between 8.00am–8.00pm Monday–Friday and 10.00am–4.00pm Saturday and Sunday.
