What is our role?

Our role is to interpret existing treaties and protocols and administer Australia's network of other international treaties. This includes clarifying how the law applies and ensuring compliance with the law through various programs and activities.

We liaise closely with the OECDExternal Link and its treaty partners in order to stay abreast of emerging trends in international law and taxpayer activity/behaviour. We also contribute to the design of Australian treaties and provide support to the Treasury in its negotiation of new treaties. While the Treasury is responsible for treaty policy issues, we are responsible for interpreting issues arising from the negotiation, administration or application of tax treaties that may need to be considered by the Treasury or government.
