  • Natural disasters – March–April 2017

In March 2017, Tropical Cyclone Debbie caused damage to various areas in North Queensland. The cyclone was later downgraded to a tropical low which brought with it damaging winds and heavy rainfall. This led to flooding throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales.

If you have been affected by these events, we understand your main priority is keeping yourself and your family safe and secure. We don't want you to be concerned if you are facing problems with lodging or paying your tax or business activity statements because of this event. We will work with you to get things back on track once the emergency is over.

    Support is available for you

If your business or residential address is in one of the identified highly impacted postcodes listed below, we will automatically make arrangements to defer the following tax obligations for you (you don't need to apply for a deferral):

    • lodgment and payment of monthly activity statements due 21 April 2017 – deferred to 21 May 2017
    • lodgment and payment of quarterly activity statements due 28 April 2017 – deferred to 28 May 2017
    • income tax returns due 31 March 2017 now have until 30 April 2017 to lodge.

These arrangements are in line with the financial assistance made available by the Australian Government. Additional postcodes may be added to the list once damage assessments have been finalised.

Tax practitioners and their clients affected by this natural disaster can access additional support. For information, go to ato.gov.au/naturaldisastersupport.

These deferrals do not apply to large withholders (that is, those who have previously withheld more than $1 million annually or are part of a corporate group that has). We cannot vary the contribution due date or waive the nominal interest on late super guarantee payments.

All deferrals granted for later dates will still apply. If you are affected by this disaster and you need further assistance, or your business is affected but is outside the following postcodes, phone us on 1800 806 218.
