  • Getting the deceased person's TFN

If you are the authorised person for a deceased person and can't find their tax file number (TFN) in their personal papers or records, you can contact us.

The authorised person responsible for administering the deceased estate is the legal personal representative. This may be an executor or administrator who has been granted probate or letters of administration (LOA) by a court, or a public trustee with certificate of authority.

Before you phone us, you will need to complete the form, Notifying us if you are the authorised person.

We can't disclose their TFN until we know you have authorisation. Once we receive this form, you can either request the deceased person's TFN:

    • over the phone
    • be sent to you.

Even if you have notified us that you are the authorised person, you won't be able to access the deceased person's

    • ATO Online services account through myGov
    • any ATO correspondence they receive in their myGov Inbox.

If you require access the deceased person's information, see Accessing a deceased person's information.
