    How do I apply for a TFN?

    Follow these three simple steps:

    Step 1. Online form

    Complete the online formExternal Link

    Step 2. Print summary

    After submitting your application, print your application summary – you will need it for Step 3.

    Step 3. Australia Post interview

    Visit the Australia Post office locatorExternal Link to find a participating retail outlet near you. To complete your application, you must attend an interview to present your proof of identity documents within 30 days.

    You can either book an appointment or simply attend a participating Australia Post retail outlet for an interview. Bookings are not essential.

    Don’t forget to take your printed application summary as well as original proof of identity documents to your interview.

    Signature requirements

    If you are:

    • 16 years old or over – you must sign your application (if you are unable to sign your application, refer to Protected persons).
    • 13 to 15 years old – you or your parent or guardian can sign your application.
    • 12 years old or under – your parent or guardian must sign the application on your behalf.

    If you complete a TFN application on behalf of another person, this does not give you the authority to ask about their tax matters.

    If you are a parent or guardian signing on behalf of a TFN Recipient who is under 16, you will need to provide all of the following:

    • two proof of identity documents for the TFN Recipient,
    • your own TFN in the online form (or three proof of identity documents for yourself)
    • a proof of eligibility document.

    Protected persons

    If you are a parent or guardian signing on behalf of a TFN Recipient that is:

    • either 16 or 17 years old and unable to sign their own application, you will need to provide all of the following 
      • three proof of identity documents for the TFN Recipient
      • your own TFN in the online form (or three proof of identity documents for yourself)
      • a proof of eligibility document
      • a signed statement from a doctor explaining the circumstances.
    • 18 years old or over and unable to sign their own application, you will need to provide all of the following  
      • three proof of identity documents for the TFN Recipient
      • your own TFN in the online form (or three proof of identity documents for yourself)
      • a proof of eligibility document which must be one of the following   
        • power of attorney
        • letter of attorney
        • court order
        • authorised guardianship papers.
