  • How and when to lodge your tax return

    The Australian income year ends on 30 June. You have from 1 July to 31 October to lodge your tax return for the previous income year.

    To lodge your tax return you can:

    If you use a registered tax agent to prepare and lodge your tax return, you may be able to lodge later than 31 October. Contact a tax agent before 31 October to arrange this.

    If you're leaving Australia before the end of the income year (30 June), you may be able to lodge your tax return early.

    If you need help lodging your tax return, you may be eligible for the ATO’s free Tax Help program. Tax Help is available in languages other than English in some locations.

    Regardless of how you choose to lodge your tax return, you are responsible for the information in your tax return. You need to check that your claims are correct.

    Keep your information safe when lodging

    Keeping your tax file number (TFN) and other personal identity details secure helps prevent identity crime. Thieves only need some basic details such as name, date of birth, address, myGov details, or TFN to commit identity crime.

    Use these tips to help protect your information:

    • Make sure you tax agent is registered – if you choose to use a registered tax agent to prepare and lodge your tax return. You can find a registered tax agent, or check whether a person is a registered tax agent, by visiting the Tax Practitioners boardExternal Link website.
    • Don't share you myGov account details – your myGov login details should always be kept personal and should not be shared with others. This includes your tax agent – they don't need your myGov login details to lodge your return.
    • Report any loss, theft or misuse of your TFN or personal tax information to us immediately. If you are concerned someone has your personal tax information or you have given your information to someone who should not have it, phone us on 1800 467 033 between 8.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday.
