• Correct your date of birth record

    If your date of birth is recorded incorrectly, you can fix this in a number of ways:

    Online

    The quickest way to correct your date of birth is by using our online services for individuals. All you need is a myGovExternal Link account linked to the ATO.

    You'll need at least one of the following identity documents to make the change:

    • Australian full birth certificate – not an extract
    • Australian passport
    • Australian citizenship certificate
    • Australian visa
    • Australian driver licence or learner’s permit.

    We'll check your document details with the agencies that issued them.

    At Australia Post

    You can correct your date of birth at an Australia Post outlet. Visit the Australia Post office locatorThis link opens in a new window to find a participating retail outlet near you, then:

    1. Complete the online formThis link opens in a new window
    2. Print the summary and take this to your Australia Post interview
    3. Attend an interview at a participating Australia Post This link opens in a new windowoutlet within 30 days of completing your online form. Take your printed summary and proof-of-identity documents to the interview.

    You may need to book an appointment to attend an interview at a participating Australia Post retail outlet.

    By phone

    We can correct your date of birth over the phone if you have the right documents to make the change. Just call us to speak to a customer services representative.

    You’ll need at least one of the following identity documents that can be checked over the phone:

    • Australian full birth certificate – not an extract
    • Australian passport
    • Australian citizenship certificate, or Extract from Register of Citizenship by Descent
    • Australian driver licence or learner’s permit.

    We'll check your document information with the agencies that issued them. If we can't make the changes over the phone, we'll give you other options.
