    Should you register for GST?

    17 July 2015

Have you recently set up a new business, or is your business growing bigger?

You may need to register for goods and services tax (GST).

If your GST turnover is more than $75,000 you need to register for GST.

Registering means you can claim GST credits for your business expenses, but you also have obligations such as:

    • including GST in the price of what you sell, and
    • lodging your BAS to report and pay GST to us or to claim GST credits.

You need an Australian business number (ABN) to be part of the GST system, so if you don’t already have one you can register for an ABN and GST at the same time.

You can also register for GST online or through your registered tax agent.

You must register for GST regardless of turnover if you:

    • want to claim eligible fuel tax credits, or
    • provide taxi travel.

'Taxi travel' means transporting passengers by taxi or limousine for fares. This applies to both owner drivers and people who lease a taxi. See also providing taxi travel services through ride-sourcing.
