  • Straight from the Source - December 2019

Whenever we get to this time of the year, I am reminded of Dorothea Mackellar’s ode to our nation ‘I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains…’ For me, the second stanza of My Country has always been synonymous with our bushfires and how they sweep through unrelenting and unforgiving. Whilst they are on one hand quite devastating, they also provide a rebirth. I will never forget visiting Marysville in Victoria after the deadly Black Friday fires, seeing the blackened charred trees that had the brightest green regrowth signalling a new beginning. It was a sign of hope.

Watching the coverage of our current bushfires is heart wrenching, however it reminds me of the important contribution made by NFPs. From the firefighters, many of whom are volunteers, to the animal welfare charities, who have been saving and relocating our famous koalas and wildlife, and the community based organisations caring for families displaced by the fires; this is our country!

December is one of my favourite months of the year, as it is a time of festivities, family and food. While most of us are thankful to celebrate Christmas or the holiday season, none of us are immune to events that rock our world. It is in these circumstances that I am thankful we have a myriad of organisations that support individuals and families in crisis. From addressing social isolation, to mental wellbeing and sheer loneliness; NFPs provide a variety of services and a lifeline.

So wherever you are, whether it is on the front line protecting our beautiful nation, supporting people in crisis or simply donating your time or resources to help others, may the spirit of Christmas bring you peace and joy.

Thank you for a wonderful and insightful 2019 and I look forward to working with you and sharing my thoughts in 2020.
