  • Getting started with an ABN

It can be overwhelming starting a not-for-profit, but when it comes time to register for an Australian Business Number (ABN) we're here to help.

In most cases you will need an ABN before you start running your organisation. An ABN is a unique 11 digit number that makes it easier for businesses, the public and all levels of government to interact with you, and you can easily apply for one through the Australian Business RegisterExternal Link – it’s free.

One of the big advantages of having an ABN is that you will save time and money. It allows you to:

    • claim GST credits (when registered for GST)
    • claim fuel tax or energy grants credits (if you qualify)
    • stay compliant and be able to lodge activity statements (BAS/IAS)
    • confirm your business identity to others when ordering and invoicing
    • be identified by the Government for grants and assistance.

To help you understand ABN's better we have put together a series of short videos that will help you tell the fact from fiction.

We will be releasing new videos over the coming months, so keep an eye out in the NFP Newsletter for more.
