  • ACNC releases External Conduct Standards Guidance

Our colleagues at the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) have released a series of resources aimed at helping charities understand External Conduct Standards.

The Standards govern how a registered charity must manage its activities and resources outside Australia. They came into force in late July.

They require charities to take reasonable steps to ensure appropriate standards of behaviour, governance and oversight when undertaking activities or providing funding overseas.

    The four Standards cover:

    • the way a charity manages its activities overseas, and how it is required to control the finances and other resources it uses overseas. (Standard 1)
    • the need for a charity to obtain and keep sufficient records for its overseas activities (Standard 2)
    • the processes and procedures a charity must have to combat fraud and corruption in its overseas operations (Standard 3)
    • the requirement for a charity to protect the vulnerable people it works with when conducting its overseas operations (Standard 4).

The External Conduct Standards apply in addition to the existing ACNC Governance StandardsExternal Link.
