COVID-19 early release of super – end of year shutdown and program closure arrangements reminder

    End of year shutdown arrangements

ATO offices will generally be closed from midday 24 December 2020, to start of business 4 January 2021.

To support individuals submitting a COVID-19 early release of super (ERS) application during our shutdown period, we will have staff available in our contact centre on 29, 30 and 31 December 2020 to assist individuals with submitting their application. Our staff will be available on 1300 662 211, between 10.00am and 6.00pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).

The arrangements for issuing fund approval and additional information files during this period will be:

    • The last fund files prior to Christmas, will be sent on 24 December 2020 – this will include all approvals up to 22 December 2020.
    • We will send fund files on 30 December 2020 – this will include all approvals for 23 December 2020 to 28 December 2020.
    • Fund files will recommence as normal on 5 January 2021 for the remainder of approvals for applications made up to 31 December 2020.

We will also have fund support available on 29, 30 and 31 December 2020 through the usual FundCCRS@ato.gov.au mailbox.

Further information regarding these arrangements is available in the ATO Online application form and our website.

    Unclaimed Super Monies (USM)

We have received a small number of queries from individuals regarding rolling over ATO held super that may impact their COVID-19 ERS application. Due to the COVID-19 ERS program closing on 31 December 2020, we are advising individual’s that the rollover process may not be completed prior to submitting their COVID-19 ERS application.

Funds may receive requests from their members to hold their COVID-19 ERS payments until the ATO held amounts have been received. The decision to place an individual’s COVID-19 ERS payment process on hold is a matter for each fund to determine with their member.

Just a reminder that COVID-19 ERS determinations do not expire and super funds can delay payment if requested by their member.

Information about non-early release of super processing over the end of year period is available at super processing schedule.

    Program closure arrangements

Applications for COVID-19 early release of super close at 11.59pm AEDT on 31 December 2020. The ATO Online application form will be updated at this time advising that the program has closed. This will be further supported by messages on our website and other social media platforms.

Applications cannot be accepted after this time, however funds may still receive a small number of fund approval and additional information files into January 2021, relating to applications that require remediation.

This process is anticipated to continue until late January 2021. A further Super CRT Alert will be sent to confirm the last day that bulk files will be sent to funds. Funds will no longer need to check for COVID-19 ERS approval files after this date.

Any late remediation cases after this date will be sent via BDE and the ATO will engage with funds directly on each occasion to advise they have a file to download.

If you have any questions, email FundCCRS@ato.gov.au.
